Our Dedicated AMD Clinic

Safeguard Your Sight at Cork's leading Dedicated Macular Degeneration Clinic

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) requires expert, timely care. We provide rapid diagnostics, cutting-edge treatments, and ongoing support to protect your central vision and preserve your independence.

Are You Noticing Changes in Your Central Vision?

The macula is the small area at the centre of your retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision—the vision you use to read, drive, and recognise faces. As we age, this delicate tissue can begin to deteriorate. Because AMD rarely causes pain, early warning signs are often visual.

  • Straight lines appearing wavy, distorted, or bent
  • A blurry, dark, or empty spot in the centre of your vision
  • Difficulty reading fine print or recognising faces, even with glasses
  • Colors appearing less vibrant or washed out
  • Needing increasingly brighter light for reading or close work
Time is vision. Particularly with "Wet" AMD, rapid intervention can mean the difference between preserving your sight and permanent central vision loss. If you notice a sudden change in your vision, do not wait.

Managing macular degeneration requires highly specialised care and monitoring. As a dedicated retinal clinic, we offer expertise you can trust.

  • Gold-Standard Diagnostics: We utilise hospital-grade Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and advanced retinal imaging to detect even the most microscopic changes in your macula, long before they affect your vision.
  • Specialist Medical Team: Your care is managed by highly experienced Consultant Medical Ophthalmologists and retinal specialists who are at the forefront of AMD treatment protocols.
  • Compassionate Ongoing Support: AMD is a lifelong journey. We provide not just medical treatment, but low-vision support and lifestyle guidance to help you maintain your quality of life.
  • Advanced Technology: We are proud to announce the addition of the Valeda® Light Delivery System to our clinic—a revolutionary, non-invasive therapy for patients suffering from Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

1. The Comprehensive Retinal Assessment (45 - 60 Minutes) We will administer drops to dilate your pupils, allowing us to examine the back of your eye. We then perform pain-free, high-resolution OCT scans to capture cross-sectional images of your retina.

2. Precise Diagnosis Your consultant will review your scans with you in real-time, clearly explaining whether you have "Dry" AMD (the more common, slower-progressing form) or "Wet" AMD (the less common, faster-progressing form that requires immediate treatment).

3. Your Personalised Care Programme Based on your specific stage and type of AMD, we will outline a clear, step-by-step management plan designed to stabilise your condition and maximise your usable vision.

While there is currently no cure for AMD, highly effective treatments exist to halt its progression.

  • Intravitreal Anti-VEGF Injections (For Wet AMD): The gold standard of care. These highly effective, virtually painless injections are administered directly into the eye to stop abnormal blood vessels from leaking, actively preserving and sometimes even improving vision.
  • Nutritional Intervention (For Dry AMD): Guidance on specific, evidence-based AREDS2 vitamin supplements formulated to slow the progression of intermediate Dry AMD.
  • Advanced Technology: We are proud to announce the addition of the Valeda® Light Delivery System to our clinic—a revolutionary, non-invasive therapy for patients suffering from Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
  • Proactive OCT Monitoring: Routine, precise tracking of your macula to detect any transition from Dry to Wet AMD at the earliest possible stage.
